Two Milestone Anniversaries

In England they have been celebrating the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne on February 6, 1952. The media tells us that the Queen does not usually celebrate this day because it is also the day her father, King George VI died. The Queen’s great great grandmother, Victoria, was the only other British monarch to achieve this milestone. Elizabeth II is 85 years old. A sixty year reign of a stable leader, even when the leader is considered a figurehead, can unite a country and give it strength. I must confess to be a bit fascinated by British Kings, Queens and “nobles”. My interests tend more to the historical royals than to the modern ones. Of course, much has been made of King Henry VIII, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth  I. A number of good books have been written about those turbulent days. When we find England enjoying a calm and uncontested leadership little is written. So, however sidelined she has been, for the quiet conpetence she has brought to her reign, Just think of all the things this Queen has seen. Happy 60th Anniversary to Queen Elizabeth II.

We are also celebrating, March 8 2012, the 101st International Women’s Day. It is very fitting that these two anniversaries are celebrated in such close proximity. Women have had a much more prominent place in British royalty than we have been able to manage in terms of electing a female President in our democratic America. Of course, the term international means that we use this opportunity to celebrate the role of women and deplore the abuse of women in every culture around the globe.
